The Russian
Sputnik V
vaccine
, one of the Argentine bets to advance the immunization process, protects against all known variants of the coronavirus, including the contagious
Delta
.
This was stated on Monday by its creator, Alexandre Guintsbourg, director of the Gamaleya institute.
Guintsbourg noted that
the double injection of the drug
"protects against all currently known variants, from the British to Delta, the Indian variant."
Guintsbourg's statements seek to dispel the population's distrust of the vaccination campaign in Russia, the country with the most deaths from Covid-19 in Europe.
The Delta variant, considered the most contagious in the world, has so far caused
90% of the new infections registered in Moscow
, the epicenter of the second wave in the country, according to its own mayor, Sergei Sobianin.
Sputnik V has not yet been approved by the European Union.
In this sense, Sobianin assured last week that it would impose compulsory vaccination on workers in the service sector.
Meanwhile, Saint Petersburg, Russia's second most exposed city due to the increase in cases, announced that it plans to vaccinate 65% of local officials before August.
It should be remembered that the Sputnik V vaccine has not yet been approved by the European Union (EU).
It has been in a continuous evaluation process at the EMA since March 4 and there is still no defined timetable on when the Gamaleya Center will be able to request a license for use in the EU.
The European regulator is analyzing in real time the data shared by the manufacturer, but this process, intended to speed up the study of a possible license in the future, does not reduce the requirements for approval of the vaccine.
The EMA also warned that it will carry out "an inspection of good clinical practice" in Russia on the way in which the tests were carried out on the volunteers, to determine if the appropriate procedures were followed on a scientific and ethical level.
According to official figures,
Russia is the country with the most deaths from coronavirus in Europe, with 129,801 deaths
.
However, the balance of the statistical agency Rosstat rises to 270,000 the number of fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic.
