The pleasant summer nights in Ramon Crater, together with the wonderful visibility conditions of the International Starlight Reserve in Ramon Crater, make the starry sky of the desert a great attraction.

Towards mid-August the sky fills not only with endless stars but also with meteor showers, what we once called "falling stars".

At the height of the rain on the night of August 11-12, you will see about a hundred meteors per hour.

In recent years, Israelis have discovered the desert sky and many come to the Negev for a star vacation.

This year they decided at the "Bateva" center in Mitzpe Ramon to give travelers an experience that is more than just sitting by the fire and looking at the sky, and set up a spacious and unique complex in the heart of the crater called "

Crater of Stars

".

The invested complex makes watching the stars a learning and creative experience.

The place is located in the depths of Ramon Crater, and it seems that a lot of thought was invested in its choice. On the one hand, not a long drive from Route 40 on comfortable dirt roads, and on the other hand a sense of mid-desert, minimal light pollution and the road is not felt at all.

Slowly, as the sun goes down, the sky fills with a huge mosaic of millions of stars and galaxies that put everyone in an astronomical atmosphere, whether you are a die-hard Galileo fan or an avid Big Brother fan who has never heard of Copernicus. Either way, you can not help but get excited about watching Noga a moment before it disappears beyond the horizon, and you will eventually find yourself trying to identify the craters of the moon or the moons of Jupiter with the help of one of the giant telescopes placed in place.

The whole place is designed so that light pollution is minimal and stargazing is perfect.

Already at the entrance you will receive red cellophane paper with a rubber band to dim the light of your phone screen, the paths are marked with phosphorescent material and small red lamps, and the parking area is about 150 meters from the complex itself - so that the headlights do not disturb the star.

During the evening, which starts at 19:00 and ends at midnight, you can switch between several stations, such as a children's art corner that includes the construction of personal telescopes, coloring pages and a variety of star-inspired works. The stargazing area, which includes giant telescopes, allows for an extraordinary view of the various stars and an almost intimate acquaintance with their surface. You will also find here, a planetarium dome that screens space films for children and adults in the heart of the desert, a lecture area for those who really want to learn a few things about the stars (and not just enjoy the beauty), seating areas and a desert pop-up restaurant, so you can watch the stars alongside beer and pizza.

The complex is about a 20-minute drive from Mitzpe Ramon and operates on Thursday and Friday nights until the end of August, when in the week of the meteor shower between August 14-8, the complex will operate every evening of the week. Admission costs NIS 180 for an adult and NIS 140 for a child and includes all the stations in the complex.

The summer sun sets quite late so you can really start seeing stars only around 21:00, and in general the activity is more suitable for older children who can enjoy an activity that is experiential but requires attention patience and a desire to learn new things, otherwise exhaust the experience pretty quickly.

The entrance fee brings the average family to spend almost 800 shekels, which joins high accommodation prices and reminds us again how expensive summer is here.

It is possible and even recommended to bring food and drink from home, so that the visit can be turned into an evening of a family picnic alongside the passage at the stations.

The complex itself has no accommodation options, and during this period the area fills up with many hikers quickly.

It is highly recommended to close accommodations in advance.

In the area there are some free overnight campgrounds, like Nahal Gvanim and the Nekraot West parking lot, the weather is perfect for camping in the south so this is also a good solution for those who want to end the great freedom without a hole in their pocket.
