(ANSA) - ROME, NOVEMBER 03 - "I approached Maria Bergamascon with modesty, I never thought of immersing myself in her heart, it would have been something offensive. I did it through the sense of the mother". Sonia Bergamasco is the protagonist of the Rai1 film 'The choice of Mary' which tells the story of Maria Bergamas, mother of one of the many soldiers who lost their lives at the front during the First World War. The woman was called to choose, among 11 corpses of unidentified soldiers, that of the Unknown Soldier during a solemn ceremony held inside the Basilica of Aquileia on 28 October 1921. One hundred years after that burial at the Altare dellaPatria, Thursday 4 November in prime time Rai1 proposes the documentary film directed by Francesco Micchichè with Bergamasco in the role of the "mother of Italy".

Through the interpretations of Bergamasco, CesareBocci, in the role of the Minister of War Luigi Gasparotto, and Alessio Vassallo in the role of Lieutenant Augusto Tognasso, the docufilm traces the political, social and human events behind the birth of the Unknown Soldier. Bergamas represented for Italy all the mothers who mourned the death of their children during the First World War. She was given the task of choosing the body that would represent the Unknown Military. Initially her choice wanted to fall on the one that would remind her of her dear Antonio. Then he thought about it and opted for the tenth body, which instead had no connection whatsoever with his son.During the historic train journey that transported the body from Aquileia to Rome - a journey of 120 stops that lasted 4 days - Bergamas and Lieutenant Tognasso witnessed a unique show: in all the stages, crowds of people bowed, prayed and greeted.

The film was produced by Gloria Giorgianni for Anele, in collaboration with Rai Cinema, the Aquileia Foundation, the Municipality of Aquileia and the Istituto Luce Cinecittà, under the patronage of the Ministry of Defense.
