US police have arrested a man who appears to have repeatedly pointed his gun at homeless people.
The man is currently being questioned, according to a tweet from the Washington police.
A public search for the suspect has been underway since Monday.
The police said they were able to track him down thanks to "forensic findings," without giving any further details.
Apparently, footage from surveillance cameras at a crime scene allowed the man to be identified.
The suspect allegedly assaulted five men in Washington and New York City.
All were injured, two did not survive the attack.
All victims were homeless.
According to the investigators, the shooter acted "in cold blood" and always followed the same pattern.
The series of attacks began on March 4 in Washington, and the injured victim was taken to the hospital.
Five days later, another man was shot and wounded.
The next day, a homeless man in Washington was found dead with gunshot and stab wounds.
Shots at sleeping people
The other crimes happened early Saturday morning in Manhattan.
In quick succession, two men who were sleeping on the street were shot at.
Footage from a surveillance camera in Soho showed a hooded man kicking a homeless man wrapped in a sleeping bag, looking around, then shooting the man in the head with a gun.
In a joint statement, New York and Washington Mayors Eric Adams and Muriel Bowser warned of a "ruthless killer" roaming the streets of both cities.
