One of the most common problems that preoccupy women (and men) is hair growth in different areas of the body and ones that we would like to have thinned and if possible completely smooth: legs, arms, groin, abdomen, back and face.

Today, there are a variety of hair removal methods, each with a disadvantage and advantage, and it is worth getting to know them all closely before deciding to invest in a procedure.

"Body hair does not play a significant role in the quality of life or health of the body, so it can be removed from anywhere if it causes an aesthetic nuisance. However, one should know that hair removal (in almost all methods) can increase the risk of hair follicles inflammation," explains D. R. Lehabit Ackerman, a dermatologist. "This is not a reason to stop removing hair but simply treat before - wash the area twice in a row with antibacterial soap and immediately after treatment with antibiotic ointment."

Here are all the methods available for removing body hair, their advantages and disadvantages:

Shaving:

An old, simple, effective method for removing hair from the whole body.

Suitable for all ages, on any hair color and is not painful.

The disadvantage - sometimes injures the skin and leaves marks, effective for a short time only because the hair is not plucked from the root and in this method there is a greater chance of inflammation in the hair follicles, in people who are sensitive to it.

Contrary to popular belief - shaving does not cause overgrowth but rather diagonal growth of the hair which looks like the hair is thicker.

Waxing:

An old, effective, safe, simple method, works on all hair types and lasts a long time.

This method has hair pulling from the root so it is painful, but lasts a long time between one and two months.

Disadvantages - In hot wax one should be very careful in the facial area.

People who are prone to pigmentation - Regular waxing can irritate the skin regularly and cause dark spots such as a mustache, which is very difficult to get rid of.

Those taking Roaccutane (acne treatment) are advised not to do hot wax plucking hair.

Epilation:

A method in which an electric needle is inserted into the hair opening and heats the follicle directly.

This damages the hair follicle in such a way that the hair will not grow back.

On the face of it an effective and old method.

Which gives a very long safe solution.

Its disadvantages are that it is a slow and painful method that can also leave marks and scars.

Laser hair removal or flashes of light:

A very popular method in the last two decades, and is one of the most common treatments today.

The basis is the heating of the hair follicles similar to an electric needle, however it is possible to work on a large area at once and not go through hair extensions which makes the treatment more effective faster and reduces the duration of the pain.

The basis of a laser or flashes of light is the selective absorption of energy by the brown color present in the hair follicle.

The heating causes destruction of the follicles and a very long period of time (many years - depending on the area in the body) which makes it very attractive.

The treatment is especially effective when there is a difference between the skin tone and the hair - that is, the darker and thicker the hair and the lighter skin - the laser will make it easier to differentiate between the hair and the normal skin and the treatment will be safer and less painful.

Disadvantages - Treatments with energy and light based devices can not treat white, red or light hair and there is a risk of burns, especially in dark skin.

SHR:

In this method instead of heating the follicle quickly and at once - heat quickly but gradually.

Which makes the treatment safer, faster and more effective even for dark skin and much much less painful.

Also in this method there is less chance of burns so it is safer to have dark and tanned skin as well as much less painful.

How long will it last?

Laser hair removal is not permanent.

There are situations or areas that can re-emerge later, after pregnancy for example, hormonal problems, medications and more.

The thinning of the hair in any case will be permanent and the treatment will last for many years - in some places even almost permanently.

Tips for Safe Hair Removal:

1. It is recommended to treat where there is a device that addresses a wide range of hair types and skin tones.

Effective laser hair removal sometimes requires different wavelengths (not all hairs throughout the body have similar characteristics).

2. Tanning should be avoided about a week before hair removal (on devices with advanced technology).

Dark skin can be treated today with new technologies, however very dark skin does not resemble tanned skin in its behavior.

Sun exposure in the week before treatment will increase the chance of burns from the treatment.

3. Be sure to disinfect.

Before hair removal, the area should be washed twice with antibacterial soap - in order to reduce the risk of hair follicle inflammation after the treatment.

4. Remove hair in stages.

Hair removal on the face and neck area is considered a problem area for laser treatment in light of the risk of paradoxical overgrowth - so the recommendation is to do 2-3 treatments - and only if an improvement trend is observed can treatment be continued.

5. Instead of shaving the hair (especially from an area like face) you can use an ointment that makes the hair fall out.

The hair (wax, thread, household appliance) must not be plucked in any way during laser or infrared hair removal.

6. If a burn has formed from the treatment, apply biafin cream as much as possible in the first stage, avoid sun exposure and consult a dermatologist or family member as soon as possible regarding the need for further treatment.

Early treatment of the burn will significantly improve the duration of recovery and the passing of signs.
