Many people are afraid of supply shortages, which is why some products in supermarkets are already sold out.

Lidl is now rationing food.

Kassel – It is not the first time that some supermarket shelves have been bought empty.

Already at the beginning of the corona pandemic*, some citizens were hoarding out of concern that they would soon run out of food.

The current Ukraine conflict* leads to this phenomenon again.

The discounter Lidl * does not want to continue to allow this.

"Since certain product groups, such as cooking oil and preserves, are currently in very high demand, we only sell these products in all branches in normal household quantities," the group told the Echo24 news portal.

Some of the branches already have signs with the maximum sales volume per household.

Flour and toilet paper are also affected by the rationing.

Lidl rations food: delivery bottlenecks and hamster purchases are the reason for this

Even if Lidl takes these measures, the discounter gives the all-clear at the same time: "The supply of goods in the branches of our trading divisions is fundamentally guaranteed." It can still happen that goods are temporarily sold out.

However, there are basically enough goods available.

But why are there empty shelves?

Due to the Ukraine war and panic buying, some groceries are becoming scarce in the supermarket.

Lidl has now announced that some products will be rationed.

The situation in Eastern Europe has been getting worse for weeks.

Due to the Ukraine war, there are delivery bottlenecks for goods from Russia and Ukraine.

The two countries are actually important export partners for corn, rapeseed and sunflowers.

These deliveries are now discontinued.

On the one hand, because agriculture is idle, on the other hand, because no deliveries are made.

This situation leads some citizens to worry about food shortages.

Delivery bottlenecks at Lidl: Why are products in the supermarket scarce?

In supermarkets such as Rewe, Edeka, Aldi and Co. there are currently more and more empty shelves because food is becoming scarce*.

Basic foods such as flour, yeast, preserves, pasta and various types of oil are the classics for hamster purchases.

But other products are also becoming scarce.

However, this is not a staple food.

For example, honey is affected by supply bottlenecks*.

That's because Ukraine produces about 16 percent of imported honey.

At the moment these imports are no longer available.

It's the same with the mustard seeds, which are grown in the Ukraine and could now be eliminated for the time being*.

  • Classic for hamster purchases:

  • flour

  • Oil Varieties

  • pasta

  • Toilet paper

  • canned goods

Rationing at Lidl: There are also price increases

Added to this are the price increases for many products.

A key reason for this is that petrol, gas and electricity costs have increased enormously.

The fuel prices and thus also the operation of cars and trucks are higher than ever.

This also affects food and other products.

Cereals, such as wheat, are affected by the price increases.

This is noticeable, among other things, in the prices for bread and rolls from the bakery, as well as pasta.

Many other products are affected by the spiraling prices caused by the Ukraine war and inflation*.
