What you should do now

Whether you can't find your wallet at home or abroad because you misplaced it or it was stolen, losing it is always annoying.

Here are the steps you should follow when your wallet is gone:

  • Block cards:

Credit cards, Girocard and Co. should be blocked immediately so that unauthorized persons cannot access your money

  • Identity documents:

Report to your town hall or, if you are abroad, to the German consulate and apply for temporary identity documents.

The loss of a driver's license must also be reported and a new application must be submitted.

  • Report to the police:

If your wallet has been stolen, you should report it to the police.

When your wallet is gone, including your bank card, credit cards and cash, you have to figure out how to get money quickly.

Once you've got your cards blocked and possibly filed a

police report

, the next question is how to get cash.

Especially abroad, it can be scary to be without papers and money.

Nevertheless, keep a cool head.

There are ways you can get emergency cash.

This is how you get the emergency cash abroad when your wallet is gone

Some banks offer customers a special service, namely emergency cash.

You can find out whether such an emergency cash service is possible for your account at your bank on the website of your bank.

Alternatively, you can also call the service hotline and ask.

If you want to change your checking account, you can use this checklist as a guide.

These banks offer, among other things, the “emergency cash” service:

  • DKB:

If you are at Deutsche Kreditbank, you can get either an emergency card or emergency cash within 72 hours thanks to the emergency package.

If more than 700 euros flow into the account each month, you will receive emergency cash free of charge if you lose your debit card.

If not, 150 euros will be due.

If you lose your Visa card, the service is free.

  • Deutsche Bank:

Emergency cash is also available at Deutsche Bank's BestKonto.

If you lose a debit or credit card, you can get up to EUR 1,500 at 220,000 cash withdrawal points in 170 countries.

  • Postbank:

Postbank offers emergency cash for the VisaCard Gold within 48 to 72 hours - even abroad.

However, the service costs 100 euros.

  • Sparkasse:

The Sparkasse offers you an emergency service for the Standard, Gold and Platinum credit cards.

Customers usually receive cash in the respective national currency within 24 hours at the nearest payout point.

By the way:

The withdrawal of money is not necessarily tied to a bank branch.

Depending on the country you are traveling in, the money may be brought to your hotel or you may receive the payment in local shops, just follow your bank's instructions.

Since an ID card is usually required for collection, you must first apply for a replacement document with which you can identify yourself - if you have lost your ID card and/or your passport in addition to your cash and cards.

Get money sent to you via the new PayPal service Xoom or Western Union

For one thing, it's a good idea not to keep all your cash with all your bank and credit cards in one place when

you're on vacation

.

Because when the wallet is gone, everything is gone.

For example, deposit a few bills in the hotel safe.

On the other hand, you can have money sent to you

from home abroad .

For example via

Western Union

or the new

PayPal service Xoom

.
