They are tired but keep smiling.
After a week of intense fires that ravaged more than 19,000 hectares of forest in Gironde, the 1,700 firefighters mobilized - including a hundred from Île-de-France - keep up the pace, despite the difficulty.
“The hardest thing is the schedules, we work between 12 and 15 hours a day,” explains David, a firefighter, his face surrounded and blackened by embers.
His colleague Romain confirms: “The schedules are difficult and the meals are totally staggered.
It always depends on what happens in the forest”.
Despite the many decimated hectares - more than 12,000 just in the Landiras sector - the prefect of Gironde, Fabienne Buccio, is optimistic: "The fight continues, we are not at the end of our troubles but the firefighters need good news.
Today, we can say that we have a lull and they feel it.
It's very motivating for the troops.
