(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 16 - The excess mortality in the EU rose in July to + 16%, from + 7% in June and May, and to values higher than in 2022 and to an unusually high level for that month.
Part of the increase could be due to the heat waves that hit Europe.
Eurostat communicates it.
Deaths in July were about 53 thousand more than the monthly average for 2016-2019.
In July 2020, the excess mortality rate was + 3% (10,000 deaths more than the average) and + 6% in July 2021 (21,000 excess deaths).
In the last 2 years the indicator, which does not consider the causes of death, had been linked above all to Covid.
