Germany-wide tea recall: unwanted substance in the product can have a mutagenic effect

A Dutch manufacturer is recalling its tea as a 'precautionary measure'.
The product was sold throughout Germany.
Landgraaf/Netherlands - The manufacturer Heuschen & Schrouff Oriental Foods Trading is recalling its matcha tea powder THS from the market.
The product was distributed through the TK Maxx branches in Germany and was sold nationwide.
As the reason for the recall, the Dutch-based company states an “increased amount of benzo(a)pyrene and polycyclic hydrocarbons” (PAH) contained in the powder.
According to the manufacturer, it concerns the tea powder with the best before date November 25th, 2024.
The product was sold between May 2022 and August 2022.
According to the manufacturer, it is being withdrawn from the market as a precautionary measure.
Consumers who have already purchased the tea can return the item for a full refund, the company said in a statement to consumers.

Tea recall: Federal Office warns of benzo(a)pyrene and PAH
Benzo(a)pyrene
is a chemical compound of carbon and hydrogen.
The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety warns that the substance is carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction because it can damage the cells of the germ line.
Benzo(a)pyrene and PAHs could also be found in processed foods such as smoked fish or cooking oils.
Food for infants and small children such as processed cereal-based food, infant formula and follow-on formula, as well as infant milk formula and follow-on milk, could contain PAHs.
