Carlos Alcaraz, number 1 in the world rankings after winning the US Open in September, was beaten in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Astana by the Belgian David Goffin, with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Recovered after the retirement of Dane Holger Rune, the current No. 66 in the world inflicted his first defeat without a single set since November 2021 on the 19-year-old Spaniard.
Alcaraz was on his first outing in an ATP tournament since winning in New York.
He previously played two Davis Cup games with Spain, one win against South Korean Kwon Soonwoo and one defeat against Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (world No. 13).
