If the Armenian genocide and the upheavals of history finally confined the Armenians to a corner of the South Caucasus, historically, the Armenian presence since Antiquity extended over a much wider geographical area.
To the west, ancient geographers designated the Euphrates as the boundary between Armenia and Asia Minor, the ancient name of Anatolia, and to the east was Karabagh (province of Artsakh).
These limits roughly corresponded to the ancient Armenian settlement and to a specific geographical reality: the area that is still designated today by the expression “Armenian high plateau”.
