Ancient City of Aksum

The ancient city of Axum is undoubtedly one of the most important sites in all of Ethiopia. Located in the Tigray region in the north of the country, it is known for its unique cultural heritage, rich history and fascinating archaeological sites located on its territory.

In the past, Axum served as the capital of the Kingdom of Axum, which until the 7th century AD was considered one of the most powerful kingdoms in the world. In those years, the city served as a center of commerce, religion and culture, and was known for its wealth, prosperity and technological advancement.

One of the most impressive places in Axum is the site that concentrates the huge obelisks, declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. An equally important archaeological site is the ruins of the palace of the Queen of Sheba, which date back to the 10th century BCE. Axum also has a number of important religious sites, including the Church of St. Mary of Zion, which some say houses the Ark of the Covenant and the Ten Commandments.

Lalibela and the hewn churches (Lalibela)

The magical town of Lalibela is also located in the northern part of Ethiopia, and is known for its famous churches carved out of the rock. The city lies at an altitude of over 2,600 meters, surrounded by stunning scenery and offers a unique cultural and historical experience that is hard to find elsewhere.

Lalibela was founded in the 12th century by King Lalibela, who visited Israel, was inspired and tried to create a "new Jerusalem". He ordered the carving of 11 churches into the rock in a spectacular complex called "Lalibela's Churches", which gained worldwide recognition and years later were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and are considered, to this day, one of the greatest architectural achievements in the world.

The 11 churches carved into the rock are connected by a series of tunnels and canals, forming a complex network of underground passages that visitors are invited to explore. All the churches in Lalibela are special, of course, but it seems that above all of them stands St. George's Church, carved in the shape of a cross. It is still active today and is an important pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians.
