The US armed forces are said to have been victims of sexual assault in recent years, about 100,000 men. This is reported by the "New York Times". Citing US Department of Defense figures, the newspaper writes that in 2018 alone, around 7,500 men were affected. The numbers include cases of sexual harassment, attempted coercion, and even rape.
The victims are usually younger than 24 years and have a low rank. Many of them would have to leave the army and then find it difficult to find their way in everyday life.
The number of female victims is much higher: according to the Department of Defense report cited by the New York Times, about 13,000 women were victims of sexual assault last year. However, this problem has apparently been known to the authorities for some time, as women reported attacks more frequently: among those affected, this figure is 38 percent, among men only one in five people affected.
More than half of the attacks, according to the Ministry of Defense of men. Thirty percent of the affected men said the perpetrators were female, with 13 percent of the cases involving male and female offenders. The female victims were mainly men as perpetrators.
According to the newspaper, the ministry has only been collecting figures on male victims of sexual assault since 2006. The "New York Times" quoted Nathan W. Galbreath of the Department of Defense as having been certain that this was a female problem. Abuses were either not reported at all or not pursued further.
