Environmental protection: Schleswig-Holstein opposes the climate package of the Federal Government

Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Günther does not go far enough with the federal government's climate package. In addition, the CDU politician sees the countries too heavily burdened. Like the Greens, he now wants to improve the Bundesrat.

Schleswig-Holstein has announced resistance in the Bundesrat against the climate package of the Federal Government.

Specifically, it concerns the planned new regulations on taxes, as Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) said the "New Osnabrück newspaper". "Schleswig-Holstein will not be able to agree to the law for financial reasons."

Günther criticizes: "While the federal government has more revenue, Schleswig-Holstein would lose about 25 million euros." And: "We need a fairer burden-sharing."

The new tax regulations of the climate package include the reduction of value added tax on long-distance rail travel, the increase in the commuter tax rate from the 21st kilometer and the tax incentive for energy-efficient building refurbishment. This means revenue shortfalls for the federal government as well as for states and municipalities. However, according to the plans, the federal government is receiving new revenue from the CO2 pricing and the higher aviation tax.

Daniel Günther (CDU) wants a CO2 price of 40 euros. The planned ten euros per tonne has "no sufficient steering effect"

Günther was a champion in the CDU for a CO2 tax and a high price on the climate-damaging gas. Therefore, the North German head of government now wants to enforce changes to the climate package in other places.

So he demands a CO2 entry price of 40 euros per ton. The previously planned starting price of ten euros "will not achieve sufficient steering effect," he told the newspaper.

Baden-Württemberg Kretschmann also wants to catch up

In addition, the entire system of taxes, duties and levies in the energy sector must be reviewed. "Renewable energy that we have abundantly needs to become cheaper so it can be used in other areas as well." Schleswig-Holstein wants to bring all these points into a conciliation procedure, "if there is a majority for it," said Günther.

Earlier, Baden-Württemberg's head of government, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), had already stated that his country would not support the climate package in its current form and that it would make corrections in the mediation committee between the federal government and the federal states. The Greens are involved in government in ten of the 16 federal states.
