Salt opened fire tonight (Thursday) at the U.S. Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and at least three people were injured - and two were killed. Following the shooting, rescue forces were called to the scene, base gates were blocked, and a closure was imposed in the area. According to local media reports, the incident ended after the shooter put an end to his life. The US military said the two killed were civilian employees, but did not share any additional identifying information or a possible motive for the shooting.

The Pearl Harbor shipyard, where the shooting occurred, is responsible for the maintenance and repair of US Navy vessels and submarines in the Pacific, whose headquarters are also located in Pearl Harbor. A base spokeswoman confirmed the shooting, but declined to provide further details.
At the base, located about 13 miles from the capital Honolulu, lies 10 destroyers and 15 submarines. This Saturday marks the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which put the United States into the Second World War. In the December 7, 1941 attack, more than 2,300 Americans were killed.
