If necessary, Norbert Walter-Borjans also wants to forego the debt brake enshrined in the Basic Law in favor of necessary investments. "If the black zero opposes a better future for our children, then it is wrong, then it must go away," said the designated SPD leader at the party congress in Berlin. "And that is, let's face it, if we do not want to circumnavigate it somewhere, then it applies to the debt brake."
No growing company would submit to such an investment brake. The debt brake states that the federal government and the federal states must have a balanced budget, but marginal new debt is also allowed. Finance Minister Olaf Scholz had defended the black zero, ie a budget without new debts, repeatedly over and over again. The federal government also had the opportunity for record investments, he had emphasized.
Walter Borjans called for reasonable compromises within the grand coalition. It must always be clear what the SPD stands for, says the designated Co-Chairman. "This must be the subject of the coalition talks."
Duel between Heil and Kühnert should be avoided
He wanted to sharpen the left profile of his party, Walter-Borjans announced. What is often called left today is "really only really social democratic". If it was on the left, "that we do not accept the drifting apart of society," then he has no problem with that designation.
In this context, Walter-Borjans focused in particular on the question of distribution. Wealth inequality in Germany is one of the highest in the EU, and income inequality is also increasing. The principle that "strong shoulders should carry more than weak ones" has been eroded, he criticized.
In Germany, there is a redistribution "from bottom to top," he criticized. "It's high time to really change that." The SPD must be "again the party of distributive justice". High and highest income and wealth would again have to make a "fair contribution" to the financing of the common good.
In order to avoid a vote for the deputy-Posten between Juso CEO Kevin Kühnert and Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, there will be five vice-chiefs in the future. In addition to Heil and Kühnert, Walter-Borjans suggested that Brandenburg-born Klara Geywitz, head of Saarland Anke Rehlinger, and Schleswig-Holstein's country leader Serpil Midyatli be presented.
