The epidemic of new coronavirus related to Wuhan pneumonia continues to spread. Many experts in the Mainland compiled the epidemiological, clinical characterization, test reports, and treatment information of 41 confirmed cases in Wuhan and analyzed them. The relevant articles have been awarded by the famous medical journal " The Lancet. He Bailiang, director of the Center for Infection and Infectious Diseases of the University of Hong Kong, pointed out that it takes about eight days for patients to develop symptoms such as shortness of breath and dyspnea. During the period, it is difficult to distinguish upper respiratory infection from "Wuhan pneumonia" based on the symptoms. Symptoms appear on December 1st in the case

Research was conducted by researchers from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. The study found that of the 41 cases, 30 were male, with a mean age of 49 years and no children or adolescents. All 41 patients had pneumonia, and chest CT showed abnormalities. One-third of them were admitted to the ICU, and six died. That is, the mortality rate was 15%.

Of the 41 cases, 27 of them had directly visited the South China Seafood Market, and one of them had a collective illness. The earliest symptoms of the patient were December 1, 2019, and his family members did not develop fever or any respiratory disease. Less than half of the population suffers from chronic diseases, of which 8 are diabetic, 6 are hypertension, and 6 are cardiovascular diseases.

One case was similar to SARS without fever

The common symptoms of the case included fever, which accounted for 98% of the 41 cases (40 cases); followed by 76% with cough (31 cases) and 44% with muscle pain or fatigue (18 cases); and a small number of patients had other conditions 28% had sputum, 8% had headache, 5% hemoptysis, and 3% had diarrhea.

Dyspnea occurred in 22 (55%) of the 40 patients, and the median from onset to dyspnea was 8 days, ranging from 5 to 13 days. Twenty-six (63%) of the 41 patients had lymphopenia. All 41 patients had pneumonia, abnormal chest CT manifestations, complications including acute respiratory distress syndrome (12 or 29%), anemia (6 or 15%), acute heart disease (5 or 12%), and secondary infections. There are 4 or 10%. Thirteen patients (32%) were referred to the intensive care unit and 6 died.

The conclusion of this study is that severe respiratory diseases caused by the new coronavirus are similar to SARS and require high rates of intensive treatment and mortality. However, further research is needed on the virus's understanding, flow ethics, human transmission time, and clinical scope of the disease.

Prescription corticosteroid treatment

The study also pointed out that medical staff prescribed corticosteroids to some patients to observe and test whether the drugs can effectively treat "Wuhan pneumonia". However, referring to the "SARS" experience of that year, the treatment of early patients with corticosteroids may worsen the illness of the patients, which has caused heated discussions in the medical community, questioning the use of medications or causing complications such as immune system disorders, fungal infections, and even bone dryness.

He Bailiang: Shortness of breath and dyspnea occurred only eight days after the onset of illness

He Bailiang, director of the Center for Infection and Infectious Diseases of the University of Hong Kong, pointed out that medical literature points out that patients with "Wuhan pneumonia" are similar to SARS in terms of onset time, complications and mortality. It takes about eight days for the patient to develop shortness of breath and dyspnea. Before the dyspnea does not occur, the symptoms are similar to general upper respiratory tract viral infections, such as fever, sore throat, etc. It is difficult to do so without a history of exposure or from a specific mainland city. Identify whether the patient is "Wuhan pneumonia" or an upper respiratory tract infection.

He Bailiang expects that there will be a large number of serious cases in the Mainland in about a week. He described the epidemic situation as very severe, reminding the public to pay attention to personal hygiene, pay attention to epidemic prevention, wear a mask when going out, and should not go to the Mainland if necessary.
