A gunman was "neutralized" Thursday on a naval base of Texas without having made a victim, according to the US Navy, which did not specify if the armed person had been killed or only wounded.

"The naval security forces were alerted to the presence of a gunman this morning around 6:16 am , " the US Navy said in a statement. Initial reports have been of an injured military police officer, but a base spokeswoman said he was in fact unharmed. She confirmed that the shooter had exchanged shots with the security forces, but refrained from commenting on the condition of the shooter.

The Corpus Christi naval base in south Texas is one of the largest pilot training centers in the United States. In addition to the American pilots, many Allied airmen are trained there.

In December 2019, a Saudi serviceman in training at another naval base, in Florida, killed three American soldiers and injured eight before being shot by the police. US officials said Monday that the author of the shooting had been in close contact, for years and until the day before the attack, with the jihadist al-Qaeda organization.
