(CNN) - A 103-year-old Massachusetts woman who recovered from c
ovid-19, he celebrated with his favorite drink: a cold beer, his family told CNN.
When Jennie Stejna tested positive for coronavirus in late April, her family began preparing for the worst, her granddaughter Shelley Gunn said.
Messi statements about the covid-19 0:23At one point, they told their family that Stejna had stopped eating and drinking and that it could be her last night. They called her to say goodbye, Gunn said.
When Gunn's husband, a retiree from the Navy, asked Stejna if she was ready to die, she replied "Yes, yes," according to the family.
"She has always been a fighting woman," said Gunn.
But instead of a grim phone call from the Stejna nursing home, on May 8 they received the news that he had tested negative and had no symptoms, the family said.
"The nurses came into her room and she said, 'I'm not sick anymore, get out of here,'" Gunn said.
The nursing home staff honored Stejna's perseverance with one of her favorite treats: an ice cold beer.
"I think it has given everyone a smile and some hope, in these dark days for everyone," Gunn said.
