The gigantic explosion which, on Tuesday August 4, 2020, blew away the installations of the port of Beirut and severely damaged the old Christian quarters, is an additional tragedy for Lebanon, already the victim of a serious political and financial crisis. Once is not customary, this destruction is not due to war. The responsibility lies with the carelessness of the state. Despite repeated warnings from the port authorities, he neglected to disperse a very large stock of ammonium nitrate (a very common fertilizer, but which can, at high temperature, suddenly turn into an explosive), which had happened to him by accident there six years, as loading of a Moldovan cargo ship which had called in Beirut for engine damage, and which had not, for reasons of dilapidation, been authorized to leave.
It is a tragedy, born from the collapse of Lebanese institutions. But France cannot teach Lebanon a lesson. She had
