In Gironde, three children and their parents were outside the supervised area, north of Carcans beach, when they found themselves, at least the children, in difficulty in the water around 3:00 p.m., probably in a baïne , a sort of natural basin forming at low tide, but which can then lead out to sea.
The 46-year-old father came to the aid of the children, and was able to bring a 10-year-old boy to safety, with his mother on the shore. Then he in turn was swept away by the current, like his 17-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son, the firefighters said.
Rescuers quickly recovered the father, but he could not be revived. The searches, supported by a civil security helicopter then a military helicopter, then made it possible to recover the body of the young girl. The 14-year-old son could not be found when the search device was lifted in the early evening, said the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic.
A little further south, in the neighboring department of Landes, a 52-year-old man was spotted in distress around 12:30 p.m. off a beach in Biscarosse, where he was swimming outside a supervised area. Rescuers were able to bring him back to shore, but in cardio-respiratory arrest, and were unable to revive him.
