The corona pandemic does not stop at the finances of the British royals: The lack of income could cost several hundred employees of the royal palaces the job.
"Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the finances of the Royal Collection Trust, we have to reduce personnel costs," a spokeswoman for the Royal Collection Trust confirmed on Wednesday for the German press agency.
The foundation manages the castles and works of art owned by the British royals.
A voluntary severance payment program has been set up, which around 100 employees have made use of, the spokeswoman said.
In addition, there is a zero rate in wages and talks are being held about a reduction in pension entitlements.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, up to 300 of the Queen's 600 domestic workers could be affected by the measures.
The employees work in the royal estates, including Buckingham Palace.
In front of Windsor Castle, some workers in their uniforms gathered for a silent protest on Tuesday.
They held a poster that read, "King Heinrich cut off heads. Now they want to get rid of our jobs and cut our pensions. Loyalty is not a one-way street!" As seen on a Twitter photo from the PCS Union.
Many of the royal family's servants are organized in this.
The corona pandemic has also hit the royals hard financially.
In May, the foundation had already announced that it would cut several hundred short-term jobs due to the crisis.
