A 79-year-old local man with a chronic illness went to the Accident and Emergency Department of United Christian Hospital on the 1st of this month due to abdominal discomfort. He was admitted on the same day. He had abnormal liver function during his stay in the hospital.

He was discharged from hospital on the 4th of this month, and his blood sample was tested positive for hepatitis E in rats.

The patient did not eat uncooked pork, did not come into contact with rodents or rats, and did not travel outside during the incubation period.

He and his wife live in Lantian Village. His wife is asymptomatic.

The Center for Health Protection stated that there were a total of four cases of hepatitis E in rats this year, and the source and route of the infection have not yet been determined. The investigation is still ongoing.

According to the FEHD, staff have been sent to the patient’s residence and the public places he visited during his incubation period to clean the streets and carry out anti-rodent work. Inspections revealed that the nearby sanitation was acceptable, and no obvious rat infestation was found.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department did not see any obvious rodent infestation in the restaurant where the patient had visited. However, it found that the floor tiles and wall tiles in the kitchen were damaged. It has prosecuted the relevant restaurant licensees and provided instruction on rodent prevention.

In addition, the FEHD has contacted the Housing Department and will inspect the rodent infestation in the estate tomorrow.
