System change at Volkswagen: who and what comes after CEO Herbert Diess

The group is preparing for a system change. It is already clear: The leadership of the world's largest car manufacturer will change radically. Herbert Diess is only a temporary boss.

Herbert Diess, although CEO, will always remain an outsider at Volkswagen.

That became apparent in August 2019. A hundred employees met in front of the headquarters in Wolfsburg to commemorate the recently deceased Ferdinand Piëch, the man who first ran Audi, then Volkswagen and later united VW and Porsche.

For many, Piëch is something like the founding father of the world's largest car company.

The group stood behind a large black and white portrait of the patriarch.

On the left, supervisory board chairman Hans Dieter Pötsch (69), works council boss Bernd Osterloh (64) and HR director Gunnar Kilian stood.

Close together, black suits, black ties.

Everyone has been in this group for a long time.

CEO Herbert Diess (61) was on the right.

Gray trousers and blue jacket, open shirt collar.

Alone.

Diess has been leading Volkswagen AG since 2018; he came from BMW in 2015.

He hasn't really arrived in Wolfsburg to this day.

He won't either.
