The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday that it
plans to lay off 28,000 workers at its amusement park division
in California and Florida, due to poor assistance due to limits on the number of people it can receive in its recreational facilities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Two-thirds of the planned layoffs involve part-time workers, but the liquidation includes fixed-wage employees and non-union hourly workers, company officials said.
Disney parks closed last spring as the pandemic began to creep into the United States.
Florida parks reopened in the summer, but California parks remain closed
while the company awaits direction from the state government.
