Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his concern about the escalation of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan and called for a ceasefire in the Nagorno Karabakh region.
The Russian news agency Sputnik quoted the Kremlin press service as saying that Putin stressed during a phone call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan the urgent need for a ceasefire in Karabakh and measures to calm the crisis.
Earlier today, the Russian State Duma issued a statement regarding the situation in Nagorny Karabakh, urging the conflicting parties to return to negotiations and called for an immediate ceasefire and preventing an escalation of the confrontation in the region, indicating that there is no alternative to a peaceful settlement of the situation.
The situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region witnessed a sudden military escalation last Sunday, while the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides exchanged accusations about the reasons for the escalation. These developments came two months after a similar escalation in the border region between Armenia and Azerbaijan in mid-July, where the two parties exchanged accusations of causing it.
