The Unterschleißheim city council has signaled to a large majority that it is ready to accept migrants again.

Unterschleißheim

- The pictures of the burned down refugee camp Moria shook many people.

The catastrophic living conditions of the refugees, who are stuck on Lesbos and some of them have become homeless, prompted those responsible in Unterschleißheim to express their willingness to help - as in the district council.

Even if the city council is not directly responsible for the accommodation of refugees, the urgency motion "Admit Moria refugees in Unterschleißheim" found its way onto the agenda of the city council meeting with 25: 5 votes.

Jürgen Radtke (Greens) said: "We want to send a positive signal to the district that we are offering our support." Manfred Riederle's (FDP) objection - "The district council is responsible and has already approved a similar proposal with a large majority" - replied Mayor Christoph Böck (SPD): "We as administration see the responsibility, and that shows that the responsibility is given."

Situation in Moria "humanitarian disaster"

It was the Greens, the SPD and the ÖDP who jointly formulated the demand “to accept Moria refugees in Unterschleißheim”.

They justified their initiative as follows: “Germany and, in this context, the municipalities, including the city of Unterschleißheim, have to provide help out of ethical and Christian responsibility.” The situation of people who were made homeless by the fire was “a humanitarian catastrophe” (CSU) should be fully agreed: "Help cannot wait until unanimity is established in Europe."

With 27 votes, the large majority in the city council decided that the city would actively support the district in offering suitable accommodation options in Unterschleißheim.

In addition to the applicants, this was also supported by the CSU and Free Citizenship.

Mayor Böck sees the resolution as "an important humanitarian symbol".

AfD politicians: do not impose wrong federal policies on the municipalities

Both representatives of the AfD and Sybille Bichlmeier (SPD) voted against this course, although the latter did not comment on their rejection.

Unlike Peter Kremer, who submitted an amendment for the AfD.

He demanded that the city should not act “proactively” but rather play a “passive executive role” in the accommodation of refugees.

He spoke of a “failed federal asylum policy” because the refugees in Moria “were and are safe”.

He emphasized: "The wrong policy of the federal government should not be imposed on the municipalities." All other parties rejected the AfD amendment with 28: 2.
