No longer an enemy state: unlike the Emirates and Bahrain, Sudan and Israel had an open account

The third agreement in two months with an Arab state is the most significant, given the wars and Bashir's previous regime relations with Iran and Hamas.

However, he could undermine the temporary rule in the bow, desperate for aid and therefore succumbing to Trump's pressure.

And the Palestinians?

The announcement tonight (Friday) of a normalization agreement between Israel and Sudan joins the establishment of relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

However, unlike the two Gulf states, there were hostile relations between Sudan and Israel, so the agreement with it, although it may encounter intra-Sudanese bumps, is even more significant.

Sudanese soldiers fought with Egypt in wars against Israel, and this was a Khartoum conference from 1967 in which the Arab League declared the three "Levites" - neither for negotiations, nor for peace, nor for recognition of the State of Israel.

In recent years, under the rule of Islamist dictator Omar al-Bashir, a series of mysterious attacks that have taken place on Sudanese soil have been attributed to Israel.

Iranian weapons factories and convoys that were supposed to reach Hamas in the Gaza Strip were then attacked.

Under pressure from the Gulf states, Sunni Sudan has in recent years distanced itself from Shiite Iran and according to various reports it will also define Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

The military faction in the interim government in Sudan, led by 'Abd al-Fatah al-Burhan, has supported normalization with Israel and is close to the United Arab Emirates.

The civilian faction, led by Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdukh, objected to this, but apparently succumbed to American pressure due to Khartoum's desperation for international aid.

The agreement may face intra-Sudanese bumps.

Sudan was added to the list of countries sponsoring terrorism in 1993, after Shir was accused of sponsoring terrorist organizations, including al-Qaeda.

Many in Sudan feel it was unfair to leave the country under sanctions and on the honorable list that also includes Iran, Syria and North Korea, a year and a half after the revolution against the previous ruler accused of crimes against humanity following the violence in the Darfur region.

Al-Bashir is being held in prison, and Sudan may agree to extradite him to the International Criminal Court in The Hague in an attempt to return to the international community.

This week came to The Hague Attorney General's historic visit.

Demand accelerating reforms.

The interim government, set up on the basis of a compromise between the army and the protest movement against al-Bashir, is facing a severe economic crisis and pressure from the street, and in recent days thousands have demonstrated in the capital Khartoum and other cities demanding accelerated reforms.

Normalization with Israel is a sensitive issue in the country, and only yesterday it was reported that Hamdukh agreed to establish relations with Israel only if the temporary parliament - which has not yet been established - agrees.

In recent weeks, Islamist and left-wing politicians have spoken out against it and it is unclear how those elements will react, who may try to challenge the fragile government through an attempt to move the streets.

Another political achievement, just before the election

For US President Donald Trump, who is lagging behind in the polls after his Democratic rival Joe Biden, the declaration of the normalization agreement between Israel and Sudan is another recent political achievement, after a series of diplomatic failures with Iran, North Korea and China.

It is doubtful that this will help him in the race, where he is lagging behind in polls less than two weeks before Election Day, given the relatively small interest of the American public in foreign policy.

However, receiving compensation from Sudan for the American victims of al-Qaeda attacks in Africa in the 1990s, after decades of contacts, is not a negligible achievement.

Trump reiterated his optimism today that the Palestinians will also join the growing initiative, but in Ramallah, and certainly in Gaza, on their own.

As they were outraged at the UAE and Bahrain, Sudan has also been described as a traitor to the Palestinian issue.

Abu Mazen is apparently waiting to see if the administration in Washington will change before he may move from his position, but the Palestinians, like the Iranians, may find that even under Biden's democratic government the equation has already changed.

Another political achievement.

The political achievement of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is overshadowed by the accompanying statement announcing the normalization, according to which Israel does not oppose the sale of certain weapons systems to the United Arab Emirates.

After denials, slander and insults towards those who reported that this was indeed what was woven behind the scenes, came the announcement by Defense Minister Bnei Gantz that Netanyahu had bypassed the defense establishment in agreeing to sell the F-35s to the Emirates as well.

It can be argued whether this is indeed a real danger to Israel's qualitative military advantage in the Middle East, and in the end Netanyahu can make a decision contrary to the recommendations of security officials.

However, the fact that it was done behind the back exudes a sour smell, which can not help but mention the stench emanating from the submarine affair that has re-emerged these days.
