The former attorney general of Mexico, Ignacio Morales Lechuga, assured that the investigations of the US authorities in national territory into the former Secretary of Defense Salvador Cienfuegos violate cooperation agreements signed between the two countries in 1992. Therefore, he indicates that the government of López Obrador should ask his neighbor to the north for an explanation about the way he acted in this case. General Cienfuegos was arrested on October 15 in Los Angeles and faces drug trafficking and money laundering charges. The charges against Cienfuegos are based in part on communications interventions that Cienfuegos had within Mexico. Our colleague Rey Rodríguez interviewed Morales Lechuga on this issue and on the impact that the arrest of the Mexican military officer could have on bilateral relations. According to Samuel González, founder of the Specialized Unit for Organized Crime of the Attorney General's Office, the 1992 agreement is still in force. US laws, González points out, allow communications to be made outside the country, so these interventions are valid for the United States justice. CNN also contacted the US Department of Justice for comment on the statements of the former attorney general between 1991 and 1993 and they say they have no comment.
