Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanquez announced today (Sunday) a new state of emergency to halt the outbreak of the corona virus.
As part of the state of emergency, a local night curfew will be imposed and movement between districts will be banned in some cases.
"We are living in an extreme situation, the worst in the last half century at least," he said at a news conference after a cabinet meeting.
The state of emergency will take effect tonight, and all counties, except the Canary Islands, will be required to impose a night curfew.
Parliament will have to approve the state of emergency beyond its first 15 days, and the Socialist prime minister has asked for it to be extended by six months, until May 9.
In recent days, several provinces in Spain have called on the government to activate the state of emergency.
The state imposed one of the strictest closures at the start of the epidemic and then released the restrictions in the summer months.
However, like many European countries, it has experienced a second wave in recent weeks, and the total number of infections in Spain is the highest in Western Europe.
On Friday, it crossed the one million infected mark, and the death toll is approaching 35,000.

Catalonia was one of the first provinces to use the new legislation to impose a curfew, which will take effect tonight at 22:00.
Places open to the public will close as early as 9 p.m.
In the Madrid area, the number of people who can gather in houses has already been limited to six, and a night gathering of people who do not live together has been banned.
Sanchez's emergency order will serve as a legal framework for the implementation of a new alert system, similar to the one implemented in Germany, France and other countries.
The alert according to the risk levels will allow a ban on movement between different districts, except in justified cases such as for work purposes.
Even within the districts there may be travel restrictions under local closures.
Most provinces in Spain are already above the parameters according to which the level of danger is the highest.
What is happening across the continent?
Not only Spain has announced new measures to curb morbidity.
Italy
sees a growing burden on its health care system, and starting tomorrow bars, restaurants and ice cream stalls will close at 6pm, but most businesses will continue to operate.
In addition, most high school classes will be held remotely instead of in classrooms.
The restrictions were agreed by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and regional provincial leaders.
He said he wanted to avoid the national closure imposed in the first wave in March and April due to the economic damage.
"We think we'll suffer a bit this month, but if we bite our lips with these restrictions, we can breathe again in December," Conte said at a news conference he convened today.
The new restrictions imposed by the Italian government in recent days have led to demonstrations in Rome over the last night and in Naples last week.
Yesterday, a record number of people were diagnosed in the country, with more than 19,600 cases, and 151 people died from the virus.
At the same time,
Bulgarian
Prime Minister
Boiko Borisov announced that he had been positively diagnosed with Covid-19 and went into isolation after showing mild symptoms of the disease.
He joins another leader on the continent,

In Germany, the structure belonging to the public health body - the Robert Koch Institute - was vandalized.
The country has been dealing with contagious records in recent days.
In
Russia
, the total number of cases has crossed the 1.5 million mark, but the mayor of Moscow, the epicenter of the eruption, said the rate of spread of the corona was slowing.
