Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell today (Tuesday) congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his victory in the United States presidential election.

This, following the ratification of the victory by the electors' member.

McConnell said the electorate "had their say".

The Republican leader's statement, which was delivered on the Senate podium, ends weeks of silence on his part regarding the defeat of President Donald Trump.

"I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden," McConnell said.

"Many of us hoped the presidential election would yield a different result but our system of government has rules to determine who will be sworn in on January 20. The Electoral College has had its say."

McConnell called the president-elect "a man who has devoted himself to public service for many years."

He also congratulated Biden's deputy, Camela Harris, saying that "all Americans can be proud that our country has for the first time been elected vice president."

Biden told reporters he called McConnell to thank him for things.

And said they had a good conversation.

"We agreed to meet earlier and later," the president-elect said.
