The Coordinator of Government Operations in the Occupied Territories, Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu Rokon, announced today (Wednesday) that the Allenby crossing will be closed to traffic from 5:00 PM until a new announcement.
No passenger movements from both directions will be allowed except in exceptional cases.
According to the IDF, the decision was made in coordination with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would ask the government to extend the closure and close the overland crossings, as part of the fight against the spread of mutations in the corona virus in Israel:
"We are defending ourselves against the mutation. The British mutation is raging in the world and it has also entered Israel. We managed to stop it, we have to take it down and ensure that no new mutations that we do not even know will enter. "The government and I will pass the proposal of the Ministry of Health to the government to extend the closure, we will decide according to the level of morbidity how long," the prime minister said.
Netanyahu continued: "The second thing - we will extend the sealing of our borders. We are the first in the world to close the borders and not allow any commercial flights to enter the State of Israel. I will now add the disconnection of land accesses including Jordan roads."
