Delinquency in Ile-de-France in 2020: burglaries in free fall, domestic violence on the rise

The police headquarters on Thursday delivered its annual report. The health crisis has lowered all the figures for delinquency. But the m

Strongly marked by the health crisis, the 2020 results for delinquency are marked by indicators which are almost all on the decline.

For Paris and its inner suburbs, damage to property fell by 20.8%, deliberate attacks on physical integrity by 8.8%, and economic and financial offenses by 12.6%.

In large crowns, the trend follows the same rhythm.

Everywhere this year, the actors note an acceleration of the treatment of domestic violence by the police and the justice system.

Burglaries

Home burglaries fell 12.9% across the region.

“Break-ins are a type of public highway offense and during the months of confinement, there was no one on the streets and people were at home.

It's a mechanical drop, ”explains a police commissioner.

In contrast, in Paris and its inner suburbs, burglaries of commercial premises are on the rise (42.4%).

"In the outer suburbs, the trend is the same with, for example, an increase of 30% for the Yvelines", adds this senior official.

Unaccompanied minors

According to observers, this latter trend is particularly attributable to unaccompanied minors (unaccompanied minors).

These “miners”, neither major nor minor as the police call them, continued to break down pharmacies and tobacco bars during all the nights of the first confinement while the others took a forced break.

"The share of crimes committed by unaccompanied minors is constantly increasing," explains the Paris prosecutor, Rémy Heitz.

This is clearly the most significant issue in terms of public highway offenses.

In 2020, they represent two thirds, or more than 75% of the 4000 minors referred to the Paris prosecutor's office ”.

Their involvement in burglaries increased from 12 to 27% and for robberies with violence, the number of unaccompanied minors stopped from 21% in 2019 to 31% in 2020 ”.

Domestic violence

On the face of violence within the couple, the police headquarters noted "that the number of complaints filed has been reduced in 2020, but police interventions for reasons of family disputes have increased significantly, especially during periods of containment ”.

The Interior Ministry has not yet released the region-wide figures.

But, on the ground, the trend is obviously on the rise in a context of freedom of the victims' speech and forced confinement.

In the Yvelines department alone, the complaints filed increased from 1936 in 2019 to 2,934 in 2020 and the number of reported assault and battery more than doubled.

If the confinement prevented some victims from going to complain to the police, the number of "chats" (digital reports) posted on the Guyancourt platform, dedicated to these acts of violence, jumped during this particular period. , from 6,000 cats in 2019 to 11,000 in 2020.

The police at the heart of the health crisis

In Paris and in the suburbs, the police have been strongly requested to enforce government measures intended to curb the spread of the virus.

Within the remit of the police headquarters, 3 million checks have been carried out since March.
