The United Arab Emirates today (Sunday) released the first photo taken by the lander sent to Mars.

The photo, taken on Wednesday, shows the sunlight passing over the red star, as well as its north pole and its largest volcano, Olympus Mons.

The emirate of al-Amal (Tikva) entered the orbit of Mars last Tuesday with another achievement for the first space mission of an Arab country.

The spacecraft was launched last July from Japan, and entered Mars' orbit seven months later.

According to the space agency of the United Arab Emirates, the photo was taken just 24,700 miles from the surface of Mars, a day after the entry of the spacecraft into orbit.

"The first image of Mars taken by the first Arab mission in history," piped Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Maktoum Al , Who also serves as Prime Minister of the UAE, alongside the image of the star.

The mission aims to uncover the weather secrets of Mars, but the Emirates also wants it to inspire the younger generation in the region.

The entry of the lander into the atmosphere of the Red Star has been scheduled to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Arab Emirates into one country.

The lander is the first of three to reach Mars this month after similar missions by China and the United States last July.

They all took advantage of the time period when Earth and Mars are closest.

Amal will attack Mars for one local year - lasting 687 days - and is set to begin transmitting more information to Earth starting in September.

The information will be available to scientists all over the world.
