In Garmisch-Partenkirchen near the Notkarspitze, a police officer hit bones.

The remains bring sad certainty in an old missing person case.

  • Bones were found at the Notkarspitz near Oberammergau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

  • A police officer accidentally came across the remains while ice climbing.

  • The find brings sad certainty to an Altötting missing person case from 2018.

Oberammergau / Altötting

- After more than two years, a missing person case has been cleared up in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district - with a curious and tragic end.

Because: A police officer found the remains of an Altöttinger who had been missing since 2018 while

ice climbing

- without even looking for it.

According to the police headquarters of Upper Bavaria South, the young police officer discovered

items of clothing frozen in the ice

on a private excursion on the

Notkarspitze

.

Upon closer inspection, the policeman came across pieces of bone.

The search for missing persons for the 33-year-old began in early May 2018 after the man left his apartment on April 30 and then disappeared without a trace.

"Nobody could give information about his goal or his intentions," writes a spokesman for the police headquarters.

Four days later, the Altöttinger's vehicle was on a

hiking

parking

lot

found in the Graswang valley near Oberammergau.

"A three-day search with more than 100 emergency services began," write the officials.

The troops would have concentrated on the

mountains

in the south of the

Graswang valley

and concentrated on the valley floor.

Man from Altötting missing for two years: a chance find on the Notkarspitze brings sad certainty

But the efforts were unsuccessful.

"A sad and at the same time unsatisfactory situation for the relatives as well as for the officers of the police." Missing cases that have not been closed are not closed and thus remain present again and again, emphasizes the Presidium.

New discoveries during the search only came about by chance more than two years later: “Attentive hikers discovered

a human bone

in the creek bed of the

Großkargraben

near the

Ettaler Mühle

.” The police spokesman explains that the find was reported by the hikers in November last year.

The forensic medical examination then showed a match with the DNA of the missing Altöttinger.

In the streambed and the surrounding area, however, no further knowledge had been obtained.

Two years after Altöttinger's disappearance: Several coincidental finds in succession

It was not until the policeman's excursion to the Notkarspitze in January of this year that the result was achieved.

On his ice climbing route, the officer discovered the remains of the man, whose DNA comparison provided a match with the Altöttinger.

The police assume that the missing person got lost on the descent from the Notkarspitze.

The 32-year-old probably crashed in the catchment area of the Großkargraben - around seven kilometers from the Graswang Valley searched in 2018.

"The temporarily heavily water-bearing ditch then finally transported it to the place where it was found," writes the spokesman for the Presidium.

The recovery of the remains turned out to be difficult.

Due to the ice cover, only small

pieces of

bone

could be picked from the ice

the day after the

discovery.

A rescue attempt could only be started in the most recent thaw in February of this year.

"A police mountain guide and a man from the Oberammergau mountain rescue service set out with the support of a police helicopter," wrote the police spokesman.

Garmisch missing person case: remains handed over to family

The message from the Presidium also states: “Bolts were set and rope insurances were attached to enable work on the crash site.” The

corpse

had meanwhile been covered by 2 meters of avalanche snow and first had to be shoveled free by hand.

“Ultimately, the man's remains were recovered and flown out.” A few days later, the remains were handed over to the family.

The police wrote: “After more than two years, the relatives have a

sad certainty

, but have now been able to say goodbye to the 32-year-old.

This missing person case, which has kept the officers busy not only on business but also emotionally over a period of more than two years, can also be shelved for the police officers of the Alpine Task Force and the Criminal Police. ”There are always missing cases in Bavaria .
