The former interim president of Bolivia, Jeanine Áñez, may be transferred from the prison known as the Centro de Orientación Femenina de Obrajes to a private clinic to be treated by specialists, according to a judge ordered this Friday.

Norka Cuéllar, a lawyer for the team representing Áñez, told CNN that despite the judge's decision and the notification of the measure to all parties, the ex-president has not yet been transferred to receive medical attention in what, according to the family and jail doctors, it would be a high pressure picture.

For this reason, Cuéllar said that he was going to move to the prison to verify the situation.

"All the parties and plaintiffs who have been at the hearing have been notified at a hearing with this resolution and this decision of the tenth sentencing court," said the lawyer.

Prison authorities, invoking medical reports, said Áñez's situation was stable.

They further stated that she was being medicated, for which her care was not necessary elsewhere.

Jeanine Áñez could be hospitalized if necessary

As agreed by the judge, specialists at the South Clinic in La Paz will evaluate Jeanine Áñez.

The former interim president of Bolivia was detained on March 13.

She is accused of "terrorism, sedition and conspiracy", for allegedly having participated in a coup against then-President Evo Morales in 2019.

Along with Áñez, several members of his cabinet were accused.

Among them are also detained former ministers of Justice and Energy, Álvaro Coimbra and Rodrigo Guzmán, respectively.

While all three have denied that such a coup has ever existed, Áñez said he was the target of political persecution.

His former ministers pointed out that his arrests had no legal basis.

On Wednesday, family members denounced that Jeanine Áñez's health condition was deteriorating, for which they demanded that she be transferred to a health center.

On March 14, a criminal investigating judge in La Paz decided to send Áñez to a female prison in the Bolivian capital under preventive detention for four months while the prosecution's accusations were investigated.
