The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, confirmed that the response to the sanctions imposed by Canada on Russia will be harsh and will take place in the near future.
Zakharova said in a statement today that the Canadian government, by imposing sanctions against Moscow, has reduced bilateral relations with Russia to the lowest level in its history, considering that "Ottawa's decision comes from its anti-Moscow instincts and for a weak reason, which is not surprising and reflects Washington's desires."
She added, "This step conflicts with Canadian national interests and deprives Canada's foreign policy of its independence and of focusing on the multilateral diplomacy rooted in the interaction of previous generations of politicians.
Canada imposed sanctions on 9 Russian officials yesterday over allegations of deteriorating human rights in a list of sanctions similar to those imposed by the United States against Russia.
