Syria participated in the virtual meeting (via the Internet) organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in cooperation with the Center for Educational Measurement and Evaluation on the project “Survey of Literacy and Life Skills Assessment for Syrian Youth from the Age Group 15 to 24 Years Old”.

The meeting included a technical presentation on the project presented by one of the experts of the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in the Arab Countries. The presentation included mechanisms (generating evidence) to know what is related to reading, writing, numeracy and life skills for Syrian youth to develop educational and professional programs suitable for this age group.

In his speech, Minister of Education Dr. Darem Tabbah said, “Although the educational process was subjected to sabotage during the terrorist war on Syria and many schools were out of service as a result of terrorist attacks, Syria was able to advance the educational reality,” indicating that the Ministry, in cooperation with the concerned organizations, implemented several projects, the most important of which are ( Reconstructing the curricula in line with the aspirations of youth, achieving national competencies for the optimal investment of education, following up the rehabilitation of schools and youth within the projects of introducing life skills in classroom and non-classroom activities, and developing reintegration programs to secure education for students of general certificates and compensate for educational losses for the various educational stages).

Minister Tabbah stressed the importance of research and studies in giving indications of the scientific competence of those outside the educational process and the extent of the ministry’s success in keeping the educational process going according to the required quality levels.

In his turn, the Director of the Center for Educational Assessment and Evaluation, Dr. Ramadan Darwish, explained the importance of this project to assess the levels of literacy and numeracy skills among young people from 15 to 24 years old, in addition to the percentage of youth access to these skills in order to develop appropriate subsequent educational programs for them, address illiteracy eradication and improve their proficiency levels.

The Secretary of the National Committee for UNESCO, Dr. Nidal Hasan, stated in his speech that the study of the project was based on the basis (there is a gap in information that must be filled with high quality) in order not to be an obstacle to the education system and the development of skills for the youth group, especially during their progression to higher education and the transition to the labor market, explaining The project aims to generate the necessary evidence for youth literacy, numeracy and life skills.

For her part, the head of the education department at the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in the Arab Countries (Hana Yoshimoto) spoke about the organization's role in finding ways to address the reality and continue to keep schools continuing their work during the spread of the Corona virus because interruption leads to a loss of skills and thus negatively affects young people, indicating the importance of Providing equal job opportunities for learners.
