In March 2021, there was a 50% increase in the number of fatalities in road accidents compared to last year, according to data published today (Sunday) by the Central Bureau of Statistics.  

According to the data, in March 2021, 985 road accidents were recorded with 1,655 casualties, of which 27 were killed in 25 fatal accidents and 171 were seriously injured.

In March 2020, however, 694 road accidents were recorded with 1,391 casualties, in which 18 people were killed in 15 fatal accidents.

146 were seriously injured.

These data refer to accidents defined as "extended road accidents", in which there is at least one seriously injured person. 

In addition, in March 2021, 2,087 accidents were reported to the police that were classified as accidents with minor casualties, in which 2,691 people were injured.

This is compared to March 2020, when 1,900 such accidents were reported to the police, during which 2,433 people were lightly injured.

The published data mean that there was a 45.3% increase in the number of casualties in March this year compared to last year (1,655 vs. 1,139), while the number of fatalities increased by 50.0% (27 vs. 18).

The number of fatal accidents increased by 66.7% (25 vs. 15). 

Examining the trend data, it was found that the number of accidents with casualties indicates a decrease of 1.3% from November 2020 to March 2021, after an increase of 0.4% on average per month beginning in July 2020 and continuing until October 2020. The trend data of the number of casualties indicate that from November 2020 to March 2021, there was a decrease of 1.4% on average per month, after an increase of 0.4% between July 2020 and October 2020.   

The database of the Central Bureau of Statistics is based on information from the Israel Police, ie the accidents that were reported to the police and an accident file was opened for them, as well as information from the hospitals regarding the severity of injuries in road accidents.
