The official spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, announced that her country welcomed the statements of US President Joe Biden about avoiding escalation with Russia, noting at the same time that "the actions of the current US administration contradict what it says."
Zakharova said in a press briefing today, "We of course welcome the stated intentions to avoid escalation and cooperation ... but, unfortunately, the intentions of the current American administration run counter to actions ... and the traditional rhetoric before lawmakers confirms that Washington is not yet ready to give up the hopeless pressure and baseless accusations. Against Moscow by carrying out malicious activities.
Zakharova added, "If the American side truly intends to dialogue, it is time to set aside the confrontation rhetoric by taking practical steps to correct the abnormal situation that bilateral relations have become in at the present time because of the United States."
The Russian-American relations are experiencing a tension due to the accusations and allegations made by the United States towards Russia and the unilateral sanctions imposed against it in violation of international law.
Biden said yesterday in an annual address to Congress that he does not seek to escalate tensions with Russia and China.
