For a week and the presentation of the silhouette and characteristics of the limited series developed from the berlinetta 812 Superfast, the entire Ferrari galaxy was suspended on the revelation of its name. It won't be GTO as many assumed. The new 12-cylinder berlinetta will be named 812 Competitizione. Surprise: there is not one model but two. In addition to the berlinetta, the Italian firm has developed a discoverable version Aperta from the 812 GTS. As always with Ferrari, this kind of exercise is signaled by a vitamin cure and slimming. This will raise the hair of sports car enthusiasts, the 812's naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 now boasts an impressive 830 horsepower at 9,250 rpm,or a gain of 30 hp compared to the standard Superfast version. As for the maximum speed, it was set at 9500 rpm, a record for a road V12. That's 1,000 rpm saved compared to the 812 Superfast engine.
Diesel doomed to disappear
Engine manufacturers have largely taken inspiration from Formula 1 studies and technologies to achieve this result.
The connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft and timing have been revised.
The titanium connecting rods are 40% lighter than the steel versions while offering the same mechanical strength.
Particular care has been taken in reducing internal friction.
However, the most significant improvements are in the timing and cylinder heads, which take advantage of the F1 experience.
The removal of the rear window
The increase in power also required adapting the cooling system and the aerodynamics of the car. This is how the 812 Competizione inaugurates a single front air intake and a unique bodywork. The berlinetta thus sees its rear window disappear in favor of a closed surface entirely in aluminum and housing vortex generators on the upper surface. Ferrari reserves the possibility for owners to personalize their car with an all-new, unique graphic livery that continues throughout its length.
The 812 Competizione doesn't stop at increased power and optimized aerodynamics.
The weight could be reduced by 38 kilos thanks to the use of high-tech materials.
Similarly, to fully exploit the increased performance of this new car, the engineers have grafted it, this is a first, a four-wheel steering system.
New flagship of the berlinetta family with a 12-cylinder front engine, the 812 Competizione will be available from the start of 2022 at a price of over 500,000 euros.
