Primary school students and artists from Rottach-Egern prevailed with creative ideas in the Europe-wide pilot project “Creative Flip” - despite distance learning.

Primary school students and artists from Rottach-Egern prevailed with creative ideas in the Europe-wide pilot project “Creative Flip” - despite distance learning.

Rottach-Egern / Gmund - With regionality, the primary school students from Rottach-Egern could now score points in the Europe-wide pilot project "Creative Flip".

In cooperation with the technology and science initiative Fablab Oberland, around 90 pupils from the first, second and third grades took part.

As the only German team and one of only 15 in all of Europe, the “Learning Lab” from Tegernsee was able to prevail with its ideas.

"The aim of the Learning Labs was to develop innovative learning concepts by combining artistic, innovative and technical elements," says Christine Otsver, photo artist from Rottach-Egern and responsible for cooperation with schools in the Fablab Oberland.

In class, the children should then implement the learning concepts with the respective teachers between December 2020 and March 2021.

Rottacher primary school students: Electronic greeting cards and wooden houses by hand

Otsver had set the "Creative Flip" project in motion at Tegernsee and applied for the Europe-wide call for tenders in November 2020 after she won over school director Ulrich Throner and the teachers of classes 1a, 2a and 2b as well as 3a and 3b.

“The challenge was to generate workshops that fit seamlessly into the curriculum,” she explains.

The second difficulty was finding appointments with distance teaching in Corona times and then complying with all mask and distance rules during implementation, reports Otsver.

Together with the artists Stefan Schweihofer from Rottach-Egern and Susanne Stubner from Holzkirchen, two different concepts were developed within the flip specifications - the abbreviation stands for finance, learning, innovation and patenting. For both, the focus was on regional unique selling points that the children were familiar and familiar with.

In a workshop, the schoolchildren designed greeting cards with LED lamps, which were created either in the shape of the Tegernsee or a Christmas tree and later pre-produced with the laser cutter from Fablab.

In school and in the presence of the artists, the children designed their cards using various painting techniques and a functioning circuit between the battery and LED lights so that the cards could glow from the inside out.

In workshop number two everything revolved around the topic of alpine construction, laser cutters and mosaics.

The students had the task of building 3D model wooden houses with the correct roof shape and then decorating them with mosaic stones.

EU Commission and Goehte Institute decide on continuation - Europe-wide evaluation

A total of 91 students experienced how free and playful learning can be and how easily one can approach new, even complex topics. At the end of the day, the students were visibly proud of their work and the teachers were enthusiastic about how motivated their protégés approached and implemented the topics. “The collaboration with the school management and the teachers worked wonderfully,” says Otsver.

“The fact that we were able to convince with our concept proves that the ideas that we develop regionally are competitive. And across Europe, ”says the initiator. And: “We're not underdogs just because we're from the country. On the contrary: We have prevailed with regional topics on a European level. ”Incidentally, the project also gave two artists the recognition they deserved in the hard Corona times for artists.

In June, the experiences of all “Creative Flips” across Europe are to be evaluated and the EU Commission and the Goethe Institute will decide when and how the “Creative Flip” will be continued. Here the Fablab Oberland stands in line with competitors from Italy, Romania, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Scotland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium and the Netherlands.
