Chilean MPs on Tuesday rejected the article of a bill that provided for a tax on large fortunes intended to finance an emergency basic income to mitigate the economic devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The initiative was part of a general bill aimed at addressing the economic crisis facing the country, which recorded a 5.8% drop in GDP in 2020, the worst performance in the world. Chilean economy since 1982.
