(CNN Spanish) -

The former president of Bolivia, Carlos Mesa, announced this Thursday that he had accepted the right to remain silent before the Bolivian Public Ministry.

Mesa had been summoned this morning to testify as a witness on the events that occurred on November 10, 2019, when then-President Evo Morales resigned after 21 days of protests.

Morales supporters assure that a coup d'etat occurred that day because Morales, who aspired to renew his mandate thanks to a controversial ruling from the Constitutional Court, which enabled him to present his candidacy despite losing a referendum on that issue in February 2016 , was forced to leave his post after the head of the Armed Forces asked him to resign.

Mesa accused Evo Morales of creating the biggest electoral fraud in democracy and inventing a case to destroy the opposition and himself.

“Morales is the author of the largest electoral fraud in democracy and of having mocked the Bolivian people on F21 by not respecting his decision against his indefinite re-election.

Not satisfied with these irreparable damages, he decided to subordinate the interests of the homeland and the dramatic health and unemployment problems that citizens face to his own interest, which is none other than his unhealthy obsession to return to the presidency at any cost.

For this he wants to whitewash the fraud he perpetrated by inventing a non-existent coup, "said Mesa.

For its part, the government, through the Minister of Justice Iván Lima, offered guarantees to Mesa for his statement to the prosecution, and announced that it will not request his preventive detention.

In a statement to the media, Mesa said that he presented a document to prosecutors Omar Mejillones and Lupe Zabala in which he maintains, among others, that the legal process “has no basis of legality, it is based on false facts and manipulation of evidence. apparent ”.

For his part, the prosecutor Mejillones reported at a press conference that they will analyze whether this conduct could be classified as obstruction.
