Poland's ambassador to Israel, Mark Magirowski, was summoned today (Sunday) for a reprimand call at the Foreign Ministry.

This is due to the law passed in the lower house of the Polish parliament last week, which is expected to make it harder for Jews to reclaim property and property confiscated by the Nazis during World War II.

The Foreign Ministry said that the head of the political-strategic establishment, Ambassador Alon Bar, summoned the Polish ambassador for a conversation today.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Polish law is expected to "adversely affect, according to experts, 90% of property restitution requests from Holocaust survivors and their descendants."

The ministry added that Bar had told the ambassador "that the legislation will have an impact on relations between the two countries, stressing that it is not too late for Poland to halt processes that mean renouncing its obligations, and return to the discourse on property restitution, which was stopped in 2019".

It added that "the head of the campaign made it clear to the ambassador that this was not a historical debate about responsibility for the Holocaust, but rather Poland's moral debt to those who were its citizens and their property was looted during the Holocaust and under the communist regime."
