Two American policemen were injured today in a shooting while dispersing a crowd in the American city of Chicago.
The news agency Associated Press quoted a police source as saying: The shooting took place on the western side of Chicago while police were trying to disperse a crowd of people who were commemorating independence from Britain, wounding two policemen.
The source added that it was not immediately known whether the officers were targeted or if they were hit by random bullets.
Statistics released by the Chicago police last week show an increase in shootings in the city compared to the same period last year, and the police department has so far this year seen 33 of its officers shot, compared to 22 during the same period last year.
Shooting incidents are common in the United States with the spread of a culture of violence in American society and the right to possess individual weapons without regulating laws.
