Starnberg - When the B 2 tunnel in Starnberg will actually be opened to traffic at the end is currently open - the original date 2026 will not be. The operation of the tube poses major challenges for rescue organizations and fire services. While all safety issues are being discussed in a separate working group of the Weilheim State Building Authority, the Starnberg fire brigade has started the first training courses for the emergency services.

Commander Markus Grasl cannot and does not want to wait until the release is at the door.

That is why he and a dozen active members of the armed forces were on a first course at the International Fire Academy (ifa) in Switzerland these days, which - as a preliminary stage, so to speak - dealt with fires in underground car parks.

Underground parking fires can already break out in Starnberg, luckily there have only been minor cases so far.

The load is not unlike that of a deployment in a tunnel, which is why Grasl wants to slowly introduce his respiratory protection wearers to this maximum load.

The ifa has training facilities for this.

Start of preparation for heavy operations that will hopefully never happen: A dozen Starnberg firefighters attended a course in Switzerland these days, the first of a series of preparations for the B 2 tunnel.

This time it was about underground parking fires.

"We saw what a burden an underground garage fire is," says the commander.

The Starnbergers only looked at the ifa tunnel training facility, but already noticed what was in store for them.

In the event of a house fire, you have to walk a few meters with all the equipment, in the tunnel it will be up to 150 meters.

“That's a different house number.” From the middle of next year, the active people want to deal with these tasks and book courses, which also applies to other fighters.

The Starnbergers attended the first course together with comrades from Bad Homburg in Hesse, which is "like Starnberg without a lake," says Grasl. A subway tunnel is being built there from Frankfurt, the requirements are similar. The ifa established the contact between Starnberg and Bad Homburg, because both weirs together fill purely German-language courses. Bad Homburg is more than twice the size of Starnberg and a little further in terms of the organization of the fire brigade - there are already on-call services there, as Grasl considers to be indispensable in Starnberg, and full-time firefighters. He deals precisely with the structures, because "that is a blueprint for Starnberg".

While some of the active people were in Switzerland, the Starnberg fire brigade had set up a watch-watch back home - some firefighters manned the tool shed the whole weekend and were able to move out immediately when an action was taken.

According to Markus Grasl, that was “a test run for future developments”.

The disengagement times were extremely short, but it also became clear that the tool shed on Ferdinand-Maria-Straße is not suitable for such standby duty, also because there are hardly any social rooms, it is cramped and a lot more.

The active slept on camp beds, some not particularly well.

Grasl also wants the boathouse on the lake for the standby duty in order to increase the attractiveness;

Finding volunteers for a long service in the tool shed has proven to be difficult.
