The planned Otterfing-Gmund high-speed cycle route encounters hurdles

A continuous cycle route from Munich to Lake Tegernsee - that is the goal of an ambitious project.

Holzkirchen supports the idea.

The municipal council has approved the further plans for a cycle expressway Otterfing-Gmund.

But there are still a few questions about the route through the town.

Holzkirchen

- Jonas Marwein from the Bernard Group has presented the figures that roughly outline the project for the third time - after Warngau and Gmund (we reported) now in Holzkirchen. Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU) greeted the planner and his colleague and project manager Vanessa Platt via video.

The company was commissioned with the feasibility study, which should clarify whether a cycle superhighway from Otterfing to Gmund is "technically feasible".

The investigations revealed a 22.5-kilometer “preferred road” (see box).

The route on this would cost around eleven million euros.

Holzkirchen has a relatively small share: around 1.2 million euros for a distance of 4.2 kilometers.

For comparison: the route on Warngauer Flur costs 4.8 million euros.

However, the planners expect high subsidies from the federal government and the Free State.

Parking garage idea

"The course can still change in the next planning steps," Marwein had sent his remarks in advance.

As the debate in the municipal council showed, questions still arise here.

Above all, there were doubts about the route over Erlkamer Strasse, which is to become a bicycle route.

Elisabeth Dasch (SPD) recalled that the market town's traffic concept provided for a parking garage there.

"How do you get along?" She asked.

In principle, a bicycle street is possible, even if there is a parking garage there, said Marwein.

But project manager Platt limited: “It's not entirely unproblematic.” The bicycle should actually be the dominant means of transport in a bicycle street.

Sebastian Franz (CSU) wanted to have the police involved in any case if the choice fell on this route.

Hubert Müller (FWG) asked why the route didn't go through the train station.

“The best cycle path is the most direct route, and that is Bahnhofweg and Otterfinger Weg.” Marwein explained that the development of these paths prevented the expansion according to the standard direct cycle connection.

Karl Bär (Greens) also warned that a tour of the station square holds a lot of potential for conflict - less with motorized traffic than with pedestrians.

For the way through the village he said: "Holzkirchen still has big tasks ahead of them."

Docking with the B318

Bär praised the presented preferred road, which leads south of Holzkirchen for long stretches along the B 318. “It makes sense to drive directly along the federal highway.” Dasch had found exactly that “a shame”. “I would have liked an alternative route,” she said. Even if the location on the main road has the advantage that the federal government bears the construction load.

Wolfgang Huber (SPD) missed an "ecological counter-calculation" in the feasibility study. With the expansion of agricultural roads to cycle paths, a lot of soil will be sealed, he said. Such an ecological balance was actually not drawn up with the feasibility study, confirmed Platt. “But the hope is that traffic will shift more to cycle paths when cycle connections are expanded.” Huber also noted that it was a milkmaid bill that the federal government would bear the construction load for cycle paths along “its” roads. “In the end, it is always the taxpayer who pays, that is, we.” Huber emphasized that he was behind the project.

That is what the majority of the local councils did.

Against five votes, the committee advocated further planning steps, including coordinating the specific course of events.

With regard to the traffic concept, the market town has already taken the preferred street into account.

This was included in the competition documents, explained Eva-Maria Schmitz from the location promotion.
