Heavy rains that have hit Guatemala since May have left eight dead and 632,243 affected, mainly by floods, landslides and damage to infrastructure, Civil Protection reported on Sunday (July 25th).

According to a latest assessment, 5,636 people also had to be evacuated, detailed the spokesperson for the Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), David de Leon.
According to Conred, in charge of Civil Protection, between Friday and Saturday, 266 people were affected and 55 houses damaged in the departments of Peten and Alta Verapaz (north).
To date, during the rainy season that ends in November, 1,794 houses have been damaged as well as 56 schools, 98 roads and 11 bridges.
Every year, the rainy season kills tens or even hundreds of people in this small Central American country, in what is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change.
